So like what’s up?…

Thanks for asking. Well I’ve recently been doing some thinking about what’s going on in my life and the wider world and I have to say things are pretty sweet overall. I really enjoy my life and am excited at the prospect of being able to purchase a property to live in; not only so I can escape my parents (Love ya mum and dad, Woo!!!) but because I will be able to get a dog of my own.

I’m planning on adopting a greyhound from a local greyhound recuse organisation. I thought about it and that choice seems to make the most sense as those retired race dogs need a home where they can be loved. So that’s why I wasn’t interested in getting a puppy or anything like that. I guess that’s what also happens in human rescue houses, I mean orphanages. The cute babies get adopted but the older, less cute kids remain. Hey I’m not Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie so I’m adopting those munchkins. But an ex-race dog I can handle.

I’m going to get a black coloured greyhound, the reason being, and when I heard this from animal rescue people I was shocked. Apparently, black coloured dogs are the hardest to find homes for; and usually are overrepresented when it comes to the dogs available to be adopted. The reason is that people perceive black dogs as more aggressive. When in reality, regardless of breed, colour has no impact on levels of aggression. God damn isn’t that a scary but profound indictment on the human psychology; you can witness the same prejudices being charged against black people in human society. Sad.

But back to the beautiful dog, I know they will be amazing because greyhounds are naturally playful and funnily enough are incurably lazy; like they will sleep for the entire day no problem. Sounds like the dog for me. Plus have you seen how majestic they look? God damn, fashion and function together at last, the doggo that gets it right.

Okay time to back track a bit, dog will be good, the house will be good, but life is also good now. Stop!!! Hold it right there!!! You’re probably thinking “Yeah life’s great for you and all, but that’s because you’re a white male living in Australia”. Maybe, but I recently read a book called Factfulness by Hans Rosling, some Swedish dude. Essentially, this guy used United Nations data to cast a spotlight on the state of humanity and its progress over time.

And everything’s coming up Milhouse. So, looking at the figures, approximately 80% of all children born are vaccinated against some form of disease, women of the age of 30 have on average received 9 years of education while men on average receive 10. In the last 20 years the proportion of the world population who are living in extreme poverty (living on less than $1 USD a day) has almost halved. The percentage of the world population that has access to electricity is around 80%. There aren’t just rich and poor countries, the majority of nations are middle income nations. Lastly, in the past 100 years, the deaths from natural disasters has been cut in half.

Yet what is crazy, is that if you watch the news or look at what is feed to us on social media, the world seems to be in a never ending crisis, which seems to be getter worse. Some might argue that horrible things do still happen today, and I agree no one is taking away from the fact that there are still tragedies.

But as a species we have made great strides to ameliorate them and reduce their likelihood of occurring. Remember words like ‘bad’ or ‘good’ are states of being, while ‘better’ and ‘worse’ are directions. So something can be in a bad state but be getting better, just like things can be in a good state but getting worse.

All in all, be grateful for whatever you have in life. And as Future once said “I got red bottoms on… *laughs… life is good”.

FYI: another story releasing soon, get excited, also I’m going to be writing a special piece only about a page or two long about something completely different to what I normally write about.

Stay tuned.
