You ever find yourself saying those words, you’d be surprised that you probably do it more than you think.
But, I think these words are some of the most limiting there are in language. And you have to pay much attention to how you use them and when you use them.
To give context on why I think this way, I went through a bit of an inner spiritual journey not too long ago. And one of the biggest takeaways for me, was the restrictive use of identity labels we attach to one another and ourselves. I understand why we rely on them like a crutch, it’s because they give us a story we can follow but who says it’s reflective of reality.
And that’s the problem, you are so much more than the story you tell about yourself. So, take me for example, I could say that: I am a writer, and I am a biostatistician, I’m also a son or that I am an Australian; the list of labels could go on forever. However, even if I did make an infinite list of labels that could be attached to my identity, you still wouldn’t truly know what or who I truly am, you would be missing my Truth.
Furthermore, think about what any of those labels represent. Is there a universal interpretation to what any of them are? For instance, what does it mean to be an Australian? Many people might give you similar answers but none would ever truly be the same, everyone carries their own assumptions about what the label means. Same goes for the others: writer, biostatistician, son, choose your own…. it doesn’t matter.
So, stop using these labels on yourself, you’re so much more than that, your potential and nuance is immeasurable.
Now, you might be asking, “well than what do I refer to myself as?” Easy, just say “I am” but nothing else after. The words “I am” just by themselves capture who you are. Stay with me on this one… but you are what you are, right? So, you are existing while the world is existing around you. Which means you are in existence, which means you are what you are and nothing else, so you say “I am”. (Read it like 4 or 5 times, you’ll get the meaning, if not message me and we’ll talk)
