Spaces

Hey there my Hedites, another week and we got another post to run through.

Today’s post is about something I spoken to you about before but I was reminded of its powerful effects this week. So, I felt that if I had forgotten something this important then it was necessary to bring it up with all of you.

It’s about the environment, or in other words, the spaces which you find yourself in. Over this working week I spent two days working from home while the other three I spent in the office. The difference in how I felt and how my overall level of motivation seemed to be directly linked to where I was on the day.

For instance, on the days that I was in at the office, I found myself far more concentrated on what I needed to get done and in turn I managed to action far more than usual. On the other hand, the days I worked from home I was far less productive and really struggled to put my mind onto the tasks that I needed to get done.

I think the reason for this is that the space I use for working from home is also the space I do many of my other personal life tasks. As in creative writing, university study, checking emails and creating this content. It is difficult to pin down which of those are responsible for my reduced work state but who knows it could be due to something I have forgotten to mention.

But the crux of the problem looks to be that when working from home my subconscious is distracted by things that it would rather be doing at that present moment. This saps me of the energy and focus to get my current work done.

In conclusion, from my own personal study I have seen how having multiple and diverse activities done in the same space makes it difficult to get any of them done. I would go further to say that with each separate task that you bring into a space, the more every activity suffers as a result. Take as an example, bringing your laptop into your gym/workout area; you’ll be tempted to check your emails or something along those lines and both your workout and email checking become less optimally performed.

The solution then presents itself quite easily in my mind. Only one task should be assigned to a certain space. Over the coming week I’m going to sit down and find spaces around my place that can serve as specific locations for specific tasks or activities. I think it would be worthwhile if you did the same.

Thanks again my Hedites.
