Mission Statement

You smell that??? Smells like someone cooking up something good in the kitchen today. That someone would be me of course, because I want to share with you something I can’t believe I haven’t shared with you before. Whoops. However, it is a vital guiding force for everything we do in our lives. So, it’s time to learn about Mission Statements.

Now, if you work at a company or organisation of any sort, you may have come across that institution’s Mission Statement. Normally, these documents are pretty bland and uninspiring. They tend to follow along the lines of “We want to be world class for customer service and satisfaction” or “To become the number #1 innovating force in the market to drive structural changes in customer experience”.

When we read things like that, we tend to roll our eyes. I’m sure some executive has come back from a team building and management retreat; then come up with something like that and thought it’s going to inspire the employees. Not likely.

Although a mission statement for a organisation might be hard to pin down, due to the large number of people of different values and beliefs. When it comes to just you, it’s actually not that hard, and it actually carries weight. The reason for that is that we can shape the ideal person we want to be, and then strive towards becoming that. Think about it, that’s what a company’s Mission Statement is all about, it’s a written form of the ideal version or vision of the company and how it would operate. The same applies to you, having a Mission statement you truly believe in, charts an ideal course for your life that you just have to believe in going down.

For your homework, I want you to write down your own personal mission statement. What do you want to strive to be and do in life? What qualities or behaviours do you need to foster within yourself to reach those points? Why is it important that you move your life in that direction?

This Mission Statement is something you should read and reflect on, at least once a week. Thanks again to my Hedites for staying on this journey with me, please drop a like and a follow for the cause. Also, if you are struggling to come up with ideas for your mission statement, I’ve put mine down below.

My Mission Statement:

I aspire to be a responsible individual who cares for the needs of others.

I believe it is my commitment to serve my fellow Australians, that will improve my own life in turn.

I want be an understanding son, a friendly brother, a supportive friend, a loving husband and a caring father.

I must constantly strive to increase my learning across a broad spectrum of topics, also, excel in what will bring my vison closer to reality.

Be vigilant in taking care of my health, spirit, body and mind.

Respond with courage when confronting my limits, and learn to adapt.

Accept that being met with failure is a part of life, but that doesn’t make me a loser, it makes me a future winner.

Spaces

Hey there my Hedites, another week and we got another post to run through.

Today’s post is about something I spoken to you about before but I was reminded of its powerful effects this week. So, I felt that if I had forgotten something this important then it was necessary to bring it up with all of you.

It’s about the environment, or in other words, the spaces which you find yourself in. Over this working week I spent two days working from home while the other three I spent in the office. The difference in how I felt and how my overall level of motivation seemed to be directly linked to where I was on the day.

For instance, on the days that I was in at the office, I found myself far more concentrated on what I needed to get done and in turn I managed to action far more than usual. On the other hand, the days I worked from home I was far less productive and really struggled to put my mind onto the tasks that I needed to get done.

I think the reason for this is that the space I use for working from home is also the space I do many of my other personal life tasks. As in creative writing, university study, checking emails and creating this content. It is difficult to pin down which of those are responsible for my reduced work state but who knows it could be due to something I have forgotten to mention.

But the crux of the problem looks to be that when working from home my subconscious is distracted by things that it would rather be doing at that present moment. This saps me of the energy and focus to get my current work done.

In conclusion, from my own personal study I have seen how having multiple and diverse activities done in the same space makes it difficult to get any of them done. I would go further to say that with each separate task that you bring into a space, the more every activity suffers as a result. Take as an example, bringing your laptop into your gym/workout area; you’ll be tempted to check your emails or something along those lines and both your workout and email checking become less optimally performed.

The solution then presents itself quite easily in my mind. Only one task should be assigned to a certain space. Over the coming week I’m going to sit down and find spaces around my place that can serve as specific locations for specific tasks or activities. I think it would be worthwhile if you did the same.

Thanks again my Hedites.

Revisiting

Howdy, this week’s post is inspired by a recent experience I had while revisiting some of my old work. The lesson is worthwhile even if you don’t have the same backlog of reference material as me. You can still do it regardless; it just will require you to think back through your past.

So, I was just about to write my one A4 page of conscious thoughts the other day when I stopped for a moment and started to look back at days’ past. That practice was actually something I think forgot to mention when I talked about the technique the first time.

Initially, I looked through the early pages of the current exercise book I’m writing in, but that didn’t go far enough back as that book started in the second half of last year. What I did was I busted out one of the old exercise books from a couple years back. What I found was amazing.

To start off with the basics, my hand writing had gotten so much better as it looked neater and I could fit more words on a page. But after skimming through a number of pages and jumping around from month to month I was shocked at the what was less obvious.

Firstly, some of the issues or problems that were on my mind at that point in time, now looking back, weren’t really that much of a problem or if anything were a good thing because they enabled me to grow.

Another matter was that my frame of reference was different. Early on, much of my writing was centred on myself, the things on my mind usually related solely to me. But now, I take a more inclusive view of things, I seem to be seeing things through the lens of not just myself but that of community. In the sense that, I’m not focused on just what’s good for me but what would be good for everyone. Don’t get me wrong, I still use my own personal frame as well but there is a shift away from “I” to “We”.

Similar to the first point, things that I thought were important or traits that I thought were valuable. Seem to hold less significance now. Almost as if the more I’ve grown and learned, the more my value structure has developed in tandem.

What I want you to do as an exercise is to go back through your tools such as your consciousness writing, daily to do lists, daily goals lists (there is a difference between goals and to-do lists, one is about tasks while the other is about ideal destinations), habit trackers, personal journals as well as any other tool you maintain. To find that shift or change in thinking.

Now, you might be thinking, “Wait I haven’t been doing any of those things” or “I haven’t been doing them long enough to see a noticeable change”. Well, even if you haven’t been doing them for ages, still give them a revisit as you might be able to notice minor changes or the initial seeds of change.

In the case having not done them, go find my blog posts and youtube videos on those techniques and make a start. On top of that, think back in your mind, maybe go back 5 years or so. And think about the problems you were facing, what did you think was important and what values did you think were desirable? Then compare that to what you think about those things now, maybe even write it down so you have a record of it.

Like always, thank you my Hedites, your support is always appreciated. I see every day more and more people engaging in the practice of bettering their lives for themselves and for others. I feel that our cooperative is really starting to gain some traction but we need to keep the good energy going. So, let’s start sharing the campaign online to get people talking.

I’m doing my part, how about you?

Shifting Gears

I swear time is speeding up and slowing down at the same time, which seems impossible but we are almost a quarter way through 2022. In my mind it feels like it should be the end of January. Having said that, my days and in turn my weeks seem to be getting longer, not sure where I’m finding all this extra time. Weirdest sensation.

Enough about what’s going on in my head, let’s switch to what’s going on in yours. I thought it would be good to go back to sub-modalities and how we can use them to aid us. Sub-modalities, if you can’t remember, are the audio, visual and or other sensory features that make up everything we experience.

One of the brilliant things about our minds, is that it can play around and alter these sub-modalities for all sorts of purposes. Think of it like the post-production stage of a movie. Once all the film’s footage has been captured, it’s time for the editing team to add special effects, sound tracks/effects, cut unneeded scenes and so on. A reason why movie’s have this stage, is that certain editing choices can completely change the meaning of a scene or maybe the whole message of the movie itself.

So, those dynamic editing changes are what we want to learn for our own personal toolkit.

Let’s take a certain emotional state that most people say that they can’t get into, but would love to be in as much as possible. A confident state of being. Now, the process is fairly simple on paper, but it requires mental effort and a degree of charity for it to work.

  • First, think about a time when you were truly confident, a moment when you felt unstoppable, that everything you did just worked flawlessly.
  • Next, go deep into that experience, relive it in your mind, find one sub-modality that was present. It could be that, the sun was shining from behind so that it was beaming down on your neck, then go deeper, maybe the sun’s rays felt warm on your neck. So, at this point we’ve got the sun shining from behind making your neck warm. Note that down, then repeat the process but this time, start with a different sub-modality. Maybe there were birds chirping off the distance (You don’t always need to ask what other sensations the sub-modality made you feel, but it can’t hurt).
  • Repeat the above process as many times as you want, but 3 to 5 should be enough.
  • Now, once we have got our list of sub-modalities, it’s time to come up with an experience where we want to feel confident but in the past haven’t been. Or maybe you’re worried about that same experience from happening again because you think you won’t be confident. A perfect example is meeting new people. Everyone has had moments in their past where they felt nervous about meeting new people. Fear of that sticks with them, which cripples them emotionally when they do finally meet new people. This in turn adds to their list of negative experiences about meeting new people.
  • Let’s switch it up a notch. We need to instil the confidence from the first experience we examined into the negative one, the one that we want to affect change in. How do we do this? The sub-modalities!!! Take the list you came up with, relive the negative experience but add one of the confidence sub-modalities in. Don’t worry if it doesn’t make sense. For instance, how can the sun be shining on your neck when you met the person at the movie theatre? It doesn’t matter, just add it in.
  • You want to relive that negative experience as many times as needed to get the full list of confidence sub-modalities in. Upon reaching that point, crystallise that experience by repeatedly revisiting that negative moment in your life but with the new sub-modalities, do this as much as possible. That’s where the effort part comes in.

With a bit of elbow grease of the mind, you will be able to shift your attitude and beliefs around meeting new people. And remember, once you have that list of confidence sub-modalities, you can apply them to any other situation in which you want to feel confident. The beauty of this technique is that you can use any emotional state, confidence is a great start but what about feeling motivated or excited; you can do the same thing. In fact, this technique gets really crazy when you combine two lists of sub-modalities into a situation you want to change (ie. Using a Confidence list and an Excitement list in that meeting new people example).

One closing note, you can use this mental tool for future events too. So, if you are going on a blind date and meeting someone for the first time (Just running with that example again). You can imagine in your mind how that experience might look, but add the list of sub-modalities in to your visualisation to get that desired shift.

Shout out to my Hedites, I hope you give this technique a try. It really does make a big difference if you are willing to take the leap.

Like always, you are all wonderful people and I will be seeing you again soon

March ’22 Release: Prisoner’s Peace

The March 2022 creative writing release is now available online and is titled Prisoner’s Peace. After finishing this work, I was really pleased with it how turned out. The story itself isn’t something I want to get into because I’m curious to see if my intended meaning is clear enough to readers. All I will say, is that it is a bit of a psychological short story set in the Medieval Dark Ages, centred around a prisoner’s daunting experience being sent to prison.

What I found from writing this piece, is that I got re-experience the process of starting a project and not knowing exactly where it will end. Nevertheless, powering on with the writing and allowing the story to manifest itself to me naturally without me having to force it.

You can find it on Amazon’s ebook market and on Kobo’s as well.

Give it a read and tell me what you think.

Rediscover the Why

Here we are back at it again like always, this week I want to talk about forgetting why we do things.

I’ve experienced this and maybe you have too, but sometimes I get these moments where I might be doing everything I need to be. That might include, exercising, reading, meditation and a whole routine of mindfulness activities. However, I feel like I’m just going through the motions.

That isn’t where we want to be. We have to regularly remember what all this is about. Why we do all these routines and tasks, which might seem inconsequential on the day we do them. But when taken out over a lifetime, can result in colossal outcomes for our lives and other’s.

What this feeling tells me, is that it is time for me to take a couple minutes out, just before I’m going to do a daily routine or task. And close my eyes and ask out loud why I am doing this? And why I’m excited about that?

So, in practice it might go something like this:

  1. I’m about to exercise, so I close my eyes and ask “why I am going to exercise?”
  • I reply “because it will mean I stay active and healthy”
  • Then I ask “why does staying active and healthy make me excited”
  • The answer would be that it will help me to live a fuller life especially when I’m older…

Now, you can try that process for anything really, but you definitely would what to do it for your daily routine items, because those are the vital things that we need done. So, it’s best that we derive purpose out of daily actions. Also, you don’t have to limit yourself to one reason either, you can have as many as you like.

The second question uses the word “excited” for a very particular reason. That being, we might be struggling to see the point of our daily routines when we have done them for a very long time or when we are in the early stages of starting a new habit. This can result in us slowly dropping them, which is not ideal for anyone. So, the excitement part is meant to be that jolt of electricity that reawakens your passion for your routines.

Understanding why we do something, and why we should be excited about it, is a sure fire way to achieve elevated performance in your life. Losing sight of these two why’s is a normal human thing to happen, but rediscovering those why’s is what makes people legendary.

The reason why I wrote this post is that recently I experienced the same thing. A lot of routines were running on autopilot as I had been doing them for years now. I reflected and came to the realisation I wasn’t getting the same feeling out of these routines, when compared to when I first started to implement them. Going back to the roots, really helped me to shift my perspective back to where it needed to be on these matters.

I hope this kind of thinking helped you.

Shout out to all the Hedites for liking and sharing these posts, it means a lot and you all have my deepest thanks. And if you haven’t liked or shared before, get wild and do it on this one, who knows you might like the feeling.

Help Not Found

Okay, bit of a short post today. This thought came to me after being made privy to a certain bit of information about someone I know.

Sometimes people you know may change in various and unexpected ways. Ways, that might not always be healthy for them or others. But to a certain extent we have to acknowledge that it isn’t always our place or within our capabilities to help that person.

Essentially, some unsettling information came to light about someone I know and it’s one of those situations where I and others just have to let it play out. That’s not an easy thing to accept, especially since human beings like to feel in control or able to affect change. Unfortunately, some things are out of our depths, at least mine in this case.

I’m not sure if I’ll ever see that friend I know in the future and if I do, will I even be able to recognise them? It’s hard to say. But I will have to find solace either way.

I guess the message I’m getting to is, not everything is in your power to change. The domain you have the most control over is yourself and your own actions. So, that means in some instances the best we can be is an example of how to conduct life affairs.

Sorry about the more of a downer post this week, I won’t go into the personal details because that’s unfair. But these type of thoughts have been playing in my head all week.

Once again, Thank you to everyone for all your support, it means a lot.
