September Pre-Release: Coastal Field Day

Okay so it’s almost about that time again when I release my next piece, so for September the piece is called “Coastal Field Day”. This work was one of the first few stories I started writing this year, it might actually be the first. I based it off a trip I took to Bryon Bay which is in northern New South Wales, a couple years back.

A bunch of my friends stayed there to celebrate a friend’s birthday, it was a really fun time and I should probably go on a similar trip at some point in the future. Ideally when COVID settles down. But the story itself is about jealousy and miscommunication in a relationship. I won’t say much more but it sure was fun to write. Give it a shot and tell me what you think.

Oh by the way I released a free story on my blog as well this month. That one is a lot shorter but I’m still very proud of it.

Like always, more to come my Hedites.

August Pre-Release: Where is the Honor?

Okay, I know this says pre-release but I kinda jumped the gun and already posted it on Amazon. Whoops.

But this piece actually was something I wrote not too long ago in 2021, I can’t remember exactly when. But the inspiration for it was, Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War. Now, the events covered in his book span the entire 27 year war. I didn’t do that, instead I decided to set my story in the second half of the war when Athens decides to invade Sicily and challenge the dominant power on that island, which was Syracuse.

Look I’ve never been to war so I can’t fully capture it, and the account I’m going off is this one dudes. So, if you are expecting 100% accurate portrayal of events, you’re crazy. However, I referred back to the text to get a clear timeline of the campaign in Sicily. This is a work of fiction, I am trying to showcase a veteran soldier who doesn’t agree with what he is being asked to do but is torn by his sense of duty. I wanted to look at how that can impact families and relationships.

It’s a bit of a longer one of mine, but I did get a whole lot of enjoyment out of writing it.

You can find it on Amazon at the moment and I will have it up on Kobo in the next couple days.

Till next month my Hedites.

July Pre-Release: Only for a Night

Okay so it’s almost about that time again when I release my next piece, so for July the piece is called “Only for a night”. I got to writing this one about late December 2020 to early January 2021. At the time I was working at NSW’s Close Contact Tracing; the work was really intense because we were working through an outbreak of COVID in the community.

In my spare time after work I needed something to do to pass the time between shifts. In the end I decided on writing this piece. I can’t exactly remember how I came up with the inspiration for the content but the title was inspired by a song composed by Doolie, which is a young Australian musician, of the same name.

With all of my pieces of writing, I don’t feel compelled to write them in anyway in particular, I just kinda go with what feels natural at the time. Having said that, I’ve noticed personally that with each piece I write, the overall quality keeps gradually improving which is nice, and this story is no exception.

I’m not going to give any details away about what happens because I feel it’s better if you found out for yourself. So, look out on Amazon and Kobo for my newest piece in the coming days.

Like always, more to come my Hedites.

June Pre-release: Friends in High Places

So, it’s a little bit late and I know that’s my bad and all. But the release for June is titled “Friends in high places”.

This one was a bit of fun; I wasn’t trying to be too serious with this one. I just kinda let it write itself. Like it is a pretty simple premise, someone wants to get on but struggles to, and in the end someone else comes through in more ways than one.

I’m not ashamed of this piece or really anything I write, mainly due to me realising that it is all a journey of figuring out what my work is gonna be.

This one isn’t too long or anything, I did feel that it did take quite some time to get done though, I think the wording on some things stumped me for a bit.

But give it a go, see what’s up.

May Pre-release: Palm Trees and Passion

Okay now, it’s the middle of May in the year 2021. And guess what? There is a new story written by yours truly that is set to be released in the coming days. You excited? Because I know I am.

Now why would I be excited? Well, to be honest, this is what I’ve been waiting for; and for quite some time I will say. When I started this whole writing thing, I didn’t really have any idea what I was doing; I still feel like I don’t know now as well. No matter, I kept trying my hand at it and seeing what results came from it. That all progressed for some time but then this story happened.

With this story “Palm Trees and Passion”, I felt like something just clicked. It wasn’t as hard anymore to write; it came on its own. Now this story here I feel has merit, not saying the previous stories didn’t but this one was a bunch of fun.

Now I don’t want to give too much away, so I’m going to wrap it up here. But I will say that the inspiration for this one is the song “Golden Girl” by Frank Ocean from the Channel Orange album; as well as Errol Flynn’s time spent in Papua New Guinea.

So, just see where this one takes you.

April Pre-release: Keeping up with the Sullivans

The story for April is titled “Keeping up with the Sullivans”. Now I know what you might be thinking, did you just steal that name from Keeping up with the Kardashians? And the answer is no, I took the idea from the original saying “Keeping up with the Joneses”, which has to do with trying to keep up with appearances in the wider social setting. Oh shit I just realised that the Kardashian’s show gets its name from that saying too, that’s far out man.

I wrote this one quite a while back, what inspired it was a friend who shared a story with me about this time she had to babysit a bunch of kids. I can’t remember how we got onto the topic but I think we were discussing whether we wanted kids ourselves. I stated that I wanted four children, while she wanted none; I asked why, and her reason was her story about babysitting horrible rampaging kids.

Now I thought about it for a little while, and then came to the conclusion that what my friend had told me could work as the basis for a great story (great in my head at least). So, I laboured away writing the whole thing up, and turns out it wasn’t even that hard to write, it was one of the easier ones.

Without getting too intellectual or high concept, I wanted to explore the effects of out of control kids on those around them and what seems like behaviour issues is more a copping mechanism. Or something like that, you know what I mean.

Have a read and tell me what you think,

It will be coming out on Amazon and Kobo in the next couple of days, so be on the lookout.
